Materials & Tools
- Potting Soil
- Seed Potatoes
- Agricultural Sulfur
- Shovel
- Knife
Step One:
Prepare the seed potatoes. Cut the potatoes into several 1-inch chunks, as in the photo at left. Include an “;eye” on each piece. This is the growth point where the new plants emerge. Don’t cut the pieces too big. After cutting the seed potatoes, let them sit at room temperature for two or three days.
Step Two:
Prepare the bag.
Step Three:
Plant the seed potatoes by burying them, eyes pointed up, about 2" deep in the soil. Keep the potatoes well watered but not soggy.
Step Four:
When the potato plants get about 5" to 8" tall, now it’s time to add more soil to the bag. Add enough soil so that just the top few leaves poke through the dirt, Water well.
Step Five:
Harvest times will vary depending on the growing season and the size of tuber you want. When the leaves will yellow the potatoes are almost ready to harvest. Stop watering at this point and leave the potatoes alone for two or three weeks so that their skins toughen up.
